For King’s Day weekend, we have some events picked out for you. Have some drinks while watching graffiti artists paint an ode to the King and then detox at a post-Kingsday yoga class. This guide will take you from Maastricht to Groningen.
Friday, 26 April
You can taste Peruvian Flavours at the Promenade Food Festivals, a group that hosts food events once a month in collaboration with an embassy. This month, Flavio Solorzano, one of Peru’s top chefs, will pay a visit to the Netherlands to cook up traditional Peruvian dishes. Solorzano works as the executive chef at Lima’s El Señorío de Sulco and has written a research book about quinoa. Eating starts at 23:00. At Crowne Plaza Den Haag, Van Stolkweg 1, The Hague. Tickets for €39.50.
Prisoners in Public Space! encompasses several political performances from artists who cannot return to their home countries. These performers often feel like “strangers in their own environment,” and this event will showcase the clash they experience between their personal lives and social expectations. Worm Rotterdam will bring together Brazilian-born Rodrigo Batista, who led strikes near São Paulo, and Ugandan-born Keith King, who is the creative director of Uganda’s queer collective. Performances begin at 20:00. At Worm Rotterdam, Boomgaardsstraat 71, Rotterdam. Tickets for €5.
Saturday, 27 April
Watch some graffiti art at Kings Spray Street Art Festival. At the event, NDSM will host a line-up of renowned graffiti artists. The street artists will turn four container-installations into pieces of urban art. Like a proper birthday celebration, the hosts will offer music, food and workshops for those who aspire to enhance their graffiti skills. Painting starts at 11:00. At NDSM, Tt Neveritaweg, Amsterdam.
Did you forget to purchase King’s Day attire? Have no fear! Unicef Student Team Maastricht invites you to stop by at Stadspark for some holiday face paint and nail polish. You may even be surprised with a gift if you decide to pay a visit. Event begins at 8:00. At Stadspark Maastricht, Maastricht.
