After a Saturday soft launch, Utrecht’s fast tram officially opened for business today.
Connecting Utrecht Centraal to the city’s Science Park, the 9 stop line traverses UMC Utrecht, Utrecht University and the HU University of Applied Sciences across 8 kilometers. The Uithoflijn will replace a student heavy bus line, which transported some 25,000+ per day.
As of now, the line launches 10 trams per hour, however, its intention is to increase service to 12 per hour across the next year, in both directions. Currently, the Uithoflijn operates between 06:00 – 22:00.
The Uithoflijn project comes at a cost of 84 million since its 2012 green light.
