The Protestant Church in the Netherlands (PKN) must do more to combat sexual abuse in its churches despite awareness and education initiatives it has already put in place says a project group evaluation.
The group recommends that those involved with PKN in both volunteers and professional capacities provide the church with a “declaration of good conduct” (VOG) proving there have been no past issues. This certificate would prove all active pastors, professionals, and volunteers have passed their background check and the community has approved of their involvement. The project group states that this should be the starting point for involvement in the church.
The PKN will review the recommendations, which also include that it appoint confidential counselors, preferably a duo of a man and a woman, on Friday.
