After 2,5 years as a third-party fact-checker on Facebook, has ended its relationship with the social media giant.

In combination with Leiden University, acted as a third-party fact-checker for Facebook posts that were flagged with untruths. At the time, Facebook claimed the relationship was as part of an initiative to weed out deliberately placed fake news.

After Leiden University ceased its relationship last year, became the sole fact-checker. This, in addition to Facebook’s refusal to fact check politicians or political parties – the primary reason as stated by editor in chief Gert-Jaap Hoekman, has cause to make the decision.

‘We think freedom of speech does not mean you have the freedom to spread demonstrable untruths,’ Hoekman says.
