More bomb letters delivered across the country

Dutch police report several bomb letters from a single sender delivered to locations in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht this week. The letters arrived over a one week period at gas stations in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, an Amsterdam hotel, a Utrecht brokerage firm, and a Rotterdam car company.

The police report that the bombs in the letters did not explode “but could have caused serious physical injury.”

The letters say they were sent from the Centraal Invorderings Bureau (CIB), a debt collection agency located at the Wilhelminakade in Rotterdam. The police report a suspicious letter with fire damage found within CIB headquarters on 2 January which was “sent to the CIB in Rotterdam via a postal sorting center on the basis of falsified sender data.” Police emphasize that the CIB in Rotterdam has no further involvement in this case.

In an update published 3 January, police announced that all companies involved received a warning letter that arrived after the bomb letters. Two undisclosed Maastricht companies – including one on Avenue Ceramique – also received similar warning letters. Investigators did not disclose the contents of the warning letters “because this is offender information and could harm the investigation at this stage.”

The case and letters are being investigated by the criminal investigation department, specialists from the Dutch Forensic Institute, specialists from the Explosives Clearance Service Defense (EOD) and a Team Leader for Explosives Safety (TEV).

Police describe the bombs as thick letters “where the name, address, and logo of the CIB are not printed on the envelope itself, but the addressee and the sender are stuck separately on two stickers on the envelope.” They advise anyone who receives a suspicious letter to refrain from opening it and to immediately call 112.
