Dutch insurers warn of heavy fines for e scooter use

Insurers are warning Dutch travelers of significant fines regarding the use of electric scooters bought abroad and used at home.

Though legal in many countries around the world, the “step” is one of the vehicles that are banned from Dutch roads and its users are not covered by insurance, which yields to the possibility of hefty fines (380€) and confiscation should accidents occur. “While some third party insurances may cover the costs in other cases the damages will ultimately have to be paid by the owner of the electric scooter,” insurance sector spokesman Oscar van Elferen has said on the issue.
