The Dutch Supreme Court has ruled that hallucinogenic substance, ayahuasca is illegal and its sale and import falls under the country’s hard drug laws.
The Supreme Court investigation was brought on after the Santo Daime church, with branches in Amsterdam and The Hague, received some 33 kilo’s of the DMT laden tea from Brazil. As its active ingredient is DMT, which is covered under the Dutch opium laws, the tea is now deemed illegal as well.
The woman in question for importing the tea was found guilty, but a punishment was not imposed as the ruling conflicted with freedom of religion laws.
