An astonishing 70% of Dutch residents say they are unaware of the existence, and extent, of childhood poverty in The Netherlands.
In the country, some 315,000 children (below 21 years old) live below the poverty line. The numbers come from a Sam& study of 2,200 Dutch people. Sam& is an organization collective that supports children and families of limited financial means. This translates to 2 children in every school class or 1 out of 12 children.
In terms of “poverty”, Sam& offers help and services including sports, birthday celebrations, and other forms of participative activities. As a result of the poor awareness numbers, Sam& will launch a campaign to highlight the topic of child poverty across media.
